Affordable Musigny (Is there such thing?)

Affordable and Musigny are two words you don’t often see together. Combining their rarity and their simply sexy aromas, Musigny Grand Cru could easily go above $1000 per bottle, but I love finding rare gems for my Burgundy geeks, so here we go!

Dom. Drouhin Laroze has been around since 1850, currently on their 5th generation of winemaker. They are smart and unique beucase they knew the importance of good vineyard, and out of their 11.5 ha of total plots, 40% are Grand Crus, including – Chapelle Chambertin, Latricieres Chambertin, Bonne Mares, Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin de Beze, and Musigny.

Musigny is the last Grand Cru they acquired back in 1986, and it’s not often to see prestige Grand Cru change hand, so they certainly cherish it. With only 0.12 ha in Musigny (sandwiched between Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s plots – they own the most land in Musigny Grand Cru, BTW) they can only make 2 barrels Musigny each year (that’s teeny tiny!)

Their Musigny are aged in 100% new oak for 18 months (trust me, the intensity and concertation of Musigny can handle the new oak!) It’s by far the best wine Drouhin Laroze has to offer, it consistnetly outperforming their Bonnes Mares in my opinion. Musigny might not have the powerfulness of Chambertin or the meaty intensity of Romanee, but its superb color, elegance and bouquet of blackcurrants, wild roses and raspberries is worth savoring over and over again, and it’s why wine collectors (myself included) lust over this Grand Cru so much.

Why the 2014 vintage?

For one, it’s a classic vintage, not quite as bright and fruity compared to the framed 2015 and 2016 vintages but showing all the element of what a timeless Burgundy should taste like. Second, I like a wine that provides good value, compared to $850 per bottle for the 2015, the 2014 offers so much more at $640 per bottle.

The even better news? As my VIP, I’m offering it at $550 per bottle. Now the bad news, I only have 3 bottles, so you must act now! Click below to secure your bottle(s)
