Why did Angie pick this wine?

So this is the second wine for the famous La Mission Haut Brion, they’ve long been considered one of the power houses of the Bordeaux world and one of the best “Super Seconds” The 2000 vintage was generous to Bordeaux yielding one of the best crops in the decades. The 2000 La Mission Haut Brion scored a whopping 100 points from Robert Parker and is going for $770.00 per bottle and up in the open market. However, under the same management, same winemaking team, and from the same winery, you can enjoy the second lable “La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion” for a FRACTION of the price! To me this is where the value is at and where the smart shoppers spend their money and max out their sensory enjoyment! Need I say more?

 More about the winery -

Frédéric Woltner acquired the Pessac-Léognan estate in 1919 but a few years later put his son Henri in charge of it; Henri ran it until his death in 1974. Henri was an oenologist and a forward-looking one at that, installing glass-lined fermentation vats as long ago as 1926. Their squat shape maximised the ratio of skins to juice, ensuring the wines would be deep in colour and dense in structure. It remained in the Woltner family until 1983, when the estate was bought by the Dillon family of Haut-Brion, though its identity was to remain separate and distinct. La Mission is recognised today as equal to a first growth in quality, which simply confirms the wine trade’s view almost a century ago.

The vineyard has a terroir of deep gravel over clay, sand and chalk in the topsoil. Underneath, you find more gravel, which is less refined, along with clay and sand. The vineyard is well placed on a gravel hill that reaches up to 25 meters in elevation at its highest point. With vines averaging 27 years of age, the vineyard is planted to a vine density of 10,000 vines per hectare.

Tasting Notes –

2000 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion has an earthy, smoky, cassis nose. Richly fruity wine with silky tannins, loads of blue fruits, and hints of smoky barbecue and graphite, soft textures and medium body and soft cherry finish is fully mature. Already drinking well, the wine is fleshy, evolved, and complex. Drink it over the next 5-10 years.
