Eventually we all end up drinking Riesling… Here is one legendary producer worth collecting!
The Thanisch family can be traced back for 350 years in the Mosel, they own a few vineyards but none more prestige than the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard. This is a very steep site with South-West orientation (given how cold it is in Germany, this guarantees optimal sunshine throughout most of the day) consists of deep devon slate structure (best soil known in Mosel for their Riesling that gives them the elegant and mineral undertone!). Planted with 80 years old vines, they produce a full bodied Riesling with rich spices. Simply put, the Riesling wines from the Berncasteler Doctor are among the most famous and noble white wines in the world.
Why it’s even more special? This is also the site where the very first Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese ever made in the Mosel valley!
Now the wine itself is elegant and complex with bouquet of yellow lemon, quince and white peaches, a hint of lychee comes through the nose as well (I would know, I grow up eating fresh lychees in Taiwan!). This Spatlese provides incredible depth and density but perfectly balanced with lively acidity and that beautiful blue slate minerality. Delicate and long finish, the beauty of Riesling is that they are drinking lovely now, but it can age for another 20+ years and would still be amazing then!
93 Points Robert Parker
“Golden-yellow in color the 2013 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese offers a clear and mineral bouquet of ripe peach and tropical flavors. Rich, piquant, elegant and full of finesse on the palate this crystalline and salty wine is a sensual aristocrat and finishes lovely piquant and salty. This is a very elegant and expressive wine with a long aftertaste and great aging potential.” Drink 2030-2045
